Intro to Carving

Course Description:

 

Students will learn the basics of wood carving, including the specific skills and techniques needed to produce a finished carving.  Students will also learn how to work with wood and wood grains, and how to sharpen their tools.

 

No prior experience required. The class will be limited to 8 students.

 

Age restrictions: Adults and teenagers (13 - 18) permitted. Students, age 13 - 18 years old, must be accompanied by an adult.

 

Tools and Materials: All tools and materials will be provided for the course.

 

Cost (includes lunch):

            Non-members                        $45

            ACWA members                    $35

            Teens (13-18)*                       $10

                        * All students must be accompanied by an adult

 

Cancellation Policy: Fees will be refunded on a case by case basis or if we can find someone to fill the spot.

Stylized bird carving focuses on capturing the essential form and character of a bird rather than achieving perfect anatomical realism. This approach emphasizes smooth curves, bold shapes and minimal detail making it a popular choice for new carvers or those interested in decorative art.

 

Course Description:

 

Students will use a profile pattern to transfer the design onto a wood blank.  Students will use simple ratios, such as the “rule of three,” to help determine the placement of the bird’s head, wings and body.

 

Some carving experience would be beneficial. The class will be limited to 10 students.

 

Age restrictions: Adults and teenagers (13 - 18) permitted. Students, age 13 - 18 years old, must be accompanied by an adult.

Wood Burning

Explore the world of wood burning. Using a heated tool, burn designs onto a wooden surface to create unique patterns and images.

 

Course Description:

 

Students will learn essential techniques of wood burning, including the use of different wood burning tips. They will also learn how to transfer a design onto a board before burning, and will learn how to create shading and writing to produce their own unique design.

 

No prior experience required. The class will be limited to 10 students.

Relief Carving

Relief carving is a technique that creates a 3D image on a flat surface by lowering the background with chisels, gouges and carving knives.

 

Course Description:

 

Students will learn how to transfer designs onto the wood surface, and what tools and techniques are best to achieve differing effects while working on a project.

 

Some carving experience would be beneficial. The class will be limited to 10 students.
