Lie Nielsen - Build a Tool Chest

 

Dates: May 17, 18 and 19

 

Time:  9 am to 5 pm.  Lunch is not provided.

Class Description: Build a Tool Chest

  1. What you will make: You will build a Tool Chest to Hold the Core Tools

  2. Tools you will use: Bench Planes: Jack, Joiner and Smoother. Joinery & Detail Tools: Block Plane, Shoulder Plane, Router Plane, Tongue and Groove Plane, Chisels. Saws: Dovetail Saw, Carcass Saw & Panel Saw. Honing Guide and Sharpening Stones.

  3. Knowledge and skills you will gain: You will learn how to Sharpen and set up your tools, and what tools are needed to be able to build projects by hand. Wood selection and Joinery will also be covered. Glue ups, hand cut dovetails, and other techniques.

  4. Brief woodworking related biography of the instructor: Deneb Puchalski has been a Hand Tool user and instructor for over 30 years and has worked for Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for 22 years. At Lie-Nielsen Toolworks, Deneb is the primary Hand Tool Demonstrator and Educator, doing demos and teaching classes all over the world.

 

Age:  Adults; Young adults 16+

 

Number of Students:  Class size is limited to 10 students.

 

Tools and Materials:  All materials are provided. Bring your own tools if you have any on the list above. Please make sure that your tools are in usable condition, this is not a tool rehabilitation class. There will be a set of the instructor’s tools available for use, but this will not be enough for everyone.  There will be loaner tools for you to borrow if needed.

 

Cost:  $75 materials fee.  $90 shop fee.  Instructors: fee: $160       Total cost: $325

  1. What you will make: Bench aids to help with tool use and sharpening.

  2. Tools you will use: A Honing Guide, Hand Planes and Hand Saws

  3. Knowledge and skills you will gain: How to sharpen and set up your Hand Tools, and the techniques to get the most out of your Hand Tools.

CNC Planterbox or Wooden Sign

Class Description:

  1. What you will make: Students will design and rout the front panel of a planter box, or a sign.They will then construct a planter box incorporating the routed front piece, or will cut their sign to shape.

  2. Tools you will use: Computer, Origin CNC hand-held router for planter front piece.Hand tools, table saw, mitre saw, and router for planter box construction.

  3. Knowledge and skills you will gain: How to use a CNC router; and construction of a simple box

  4. Brief woodworking related biography of the instructor:This class is taught by Lisa Lackey, expert at engraving, design, and using a CNC router and Sandy Mckinnis who has been building furniture and other woodworking projects for over 45 years.

 

Age:  Adults; Young adults 16+

 

Number of Students:  Class size is limited to 5 students

 

Tools and Materials:  All tools are provided.  You do not need to bring any tools.

 

Cost:  $20 materials fee.  $40 shop fee.  Instructors fee: $20.      Total cost: $80.

Scroll Saw Puzzles

Date(s):  April 6th, 2024

Time:  10am to 4 pm.  Lunch is not provided.

Where:  Alaska Industrial Hardware Store at 2716 Commercial Dr., Anchorage

 

Class Description:

We will be using a scroll saw to cut out a small puzzle.  Several choices will be available.  You will learn how to transfer a pattern to wood and use a scroll saw to cut out the pattern.

 

Instructor:  John Lime is a very experienced scroll saw user and instructor. 

 

Age:  Adults; Young adults 16+

 

Number of Students:  8

 

Tools and Materials:  All tools are provided.  You do not need to bring any tools.

Chainsaw Milling

Class Description:

  1. What you will make: Mill raw Spruce logs into usable lumber,

  2. Tools you will use: Chainsaw, Alaskan Chainsaw mill, driver drill, draw knife

  3. Knowledge and skills you will gain: Use of a chainsaw, chainsaw sharpening

  4. Brief woodworking related biography of the instructor: Larry Holman has 10 years building houses and is an avid do-it-your selfer. Furniture and cabinet making experience. Musical instrument building.Timber framing experience.

 

Age:  Adults; Young adults 16+

 

Number of Students:  Class size is limited to 10 students

 

Tools and Materials:  All tools are provided.  You do not need to bring any tools.

Cedar Planter Box

  1. What you will make: You will construct a cedar planer box with feet.

  2. Tools you will use: Table saw, drum sander, planer, router, drill

  3. Knowledge and skills you will gain:Students will learn how to construct a standing planter box with feet.

  4. Brief woodworking related biography of the instructor:Sandy Mckinnis has for over 40 years been constructing furniture and various objects out of wood.

 

Age:  Adults; Young adults 16+

 

Number of Students:  Class size is limited to 6 students

 

Tools and Materials:  All tools are provided.  You do not need to bring any tools.

Chopsticks and Chopsticks!

Date(s): Saturday, April 13th 2024 (The Year of the Dragon)

 

Time:  After the carvers are done carving, 3:00 p.m. until we finish dinner

 

Where:  Alaska Industrial Hardware Store, 2716 Commercial Drive, Anchorage

 

Class Description:

1. What you will make: Join us for a fun afternoon making chopsticks (the actual wood kind) and learn to play chopsticks, the 19th century waltz, on the piano. We will then have some Chinese food delivered so everyone can try out their chopsticks.

 

2. Tools you will use: We will have two Bridge City Chopstick Master jigs and a Kawai digital piano. We will have Wenge and Padauk blanks to choose from and a nice cloth sleeve to keep your completed chopsticks in.

 

3. Knowledge and skills you will gain: How to make and use chopsticks and play a tune on a piano!

 

4. Brief woodworking related biography of the instructors:

 

 

 

Steve Thomas and Dohn Wood will be your instructors for this class. Both have been woodworking and involved with the club for several years. Neither are in any way qualified to teach piano but we will give it a try anyway.

 

Age:  Adults; Young adults 16+

 

Number of Students: Class size is limited to 8 students

 

Tools and Materials:  All tools are provided.  You do not need to bring any tools.

 

Cost: $6 materials fee. $30 shop fee.  Instructors fee: $0       Total cost: $36 + food costs.  Sweet Pink Pepper Chinese restaurant will cater a family style meal for this event but the cost will be in addition to the class fee. Plan on bringing payment for this on Saturday (Cash, check, Venmo, Zelle etc…). We expect this to be around $25 per student and should have a final number a couple of days before the class. Let us know if there are any allergies and we will try to accommodate.

Class Description: 

  1. What you will make:Small End Table with, drawer and tapered legs.

  2. Tools you will use: Jointer, table saw,band saw, stationary belt sander, drill press, electric hand sanders, chisels, planes and various hand tools.

  3. Knowledge and skills you will gain Intermediate skills in designing, layout,general preparation of wood, milling, and gluing, machine cut mortise and tenons,

  4. Brief woodworking related biography of the instructor: Amateur woodworker for 40 years.Professional house builder for 10 years.Rough milling and construction of local lumber, various types of wood working projects including ukuleles from scratch, furniture including tables, chairs, live edged and epoxy tables and kitchen cabinets.

  5. Table will be built out of Cherry or Maple.Must specify in advance when signing up.

  6. Students must be advanced beginner or intermediate woodworkers, which means you are comfortable using the power tools listed and have experience with the listed hand tools as well.

  7. The completed construction of this project will likely require more than the 4 days allotted.Plus finishing will need to be done at another location of your choosing.
